Cleaning Behind and Under Heavy Furniture: Frequency and Best Practices

Cleaning behind and beneath large pieces of furniture is often far less daunting than many people imagine. In fact, the unpleasant surprise of discovering accumulated dust and dirt only when moving furniture or undertaking renovations is reason enough to include these hard-to-reach areas in a regular cleaning routine. But how often should these spaces be cleaned, and what is the most effective way to tackle them?

The hard-to-reach areas like the ones under a bed, around the sofa, and behind the sideboard, should be cleaned at least every 6 months.  This can be done by either moving the furniture or creatively reaching the areas under-and-behind these pieces.

Before exploring different methods for cleaning furniture, it is worth considering the type of furniture itself, especially when there is an opportunity to choose. Selecting furniture that is easier to maintain can make routine cleaning far more manageable and help keep your interior spaces looking their best. To prevent having to move heavy furniture, albeit twice a year, chose furniture on legs with easy access to the space underneath.  Examples of such options include the Nelson Bed by Cattelan Italia, Sunset Sectional Sofa by Gamma Arredamenti, and Tide Sideboard by Horm.

Ways you can clean under heavy furniture without moving it: Use a long-handled microfiber duster or flat mop to reach underneath; attach a microfiber cloth to a yardstick, ruler, or broom handle with rubber bands; or use a vacuum with an extension wand and crevice tool.

Ways you can clean behind heavy furniture: Use a vacuum extension hose or long duster; or blow dust out with compressed air or a fan, then vacuum it up.

If the space under the furniture is almost non-existent, try a stick vacuum or any other tool with a small footprint.  And also plan ahead.  When installing new furniture or moving in, add felt pads to heavier furniture standing on hardwood or tile floors.
